This project is the essence of revitalizing an old property. The goal was to renovate and extend a traditional village house, that belonged to the family for 3 generations, to become a cozy contemporary home. Consequently, the building design required innovative solutions that allowed to maintain the character of the house while on the same time to meet current needs. The team worked closely with the owners as this property was aimed to be their permanent living.
The interior was fully redesigned, challenging the established settings. The new layout was based on the light, the views and the privacy. Above all we aimed to achieve high quality living conditions. Therefore the old structure was used as an inspiration rather than a restriction. The old courtyard was designed as the heart of the house. Old stone features was maintained and reused but combined side by side with modern light structures. The extensions were done in visible metal structure to differentiate, but they followed the volumes and the logic of the traditional Cretan houses. Where not fit with this logic, the extension became transparent in glass and metal.
